While electronic devices used to capture paranormal activity are essential, these pieces of practical gear can be used to their full potential for paranormal investigating as well. When combined with a recorder, a camcorder, or any other electronic device of your choosing, these items can produce some compelling correlating and validating paranormal experiences.
Dowsing, also known as divining, uses two L-shaped rods (most commonly made of copper) in attempts to locate ground water, buried metals or ores, gemstones, oil, gravesites, and many other objects and materials without the use of scientific apparatus. It is recommended to use copper dowsing rods with wooden handles that allow for an unrestricted swinging motion of the rods. Copper rods are not magnetic, which allows for no direct manipulation from electromagnetic fields. The wooden handles prevent hand manipulation of the dowsing rods by having your hands gripping the handles and not touching the rods at all. Steady hands, and asking simple yes/no or true/false questions can result in interactive spirit communication.
A weight suspended from a pivot so that it can swing freely. In the paranormal field, pendulums are generally used with crystals, pendants, charms, amulets, and other small objects. The pendulum is suspended over a circle with various symbols or word-based replies in which a spirit entity is asked a question and is directed to respond by swinging the pendulum in the direction of a specific response. Much like with dowsing rods, the movement of the pendulum is free range and the responses are limited to direct interpretation. While most users of this method suspend the pendulum with their hand, it is recommended to use a pendulum stand so that the movement of the pendulum is not manipulated by the movement of the person’s hand. This allows for a more credible representation of spirit communication.
A form of séance in which participants sit or stand around a table, place their hands on it (usually just the fingertips), and wait for the table to rotate, rock back and forth, or levitate. Very popular in the era of Spiritualism, it is believed that the combined human and spiritual energy of those that partake in table-tipping can generate enough energy to allow the table to move without physically manipulating the table.
Also known as a spirit board, Ouija (pronounced Wee-Jah) boards are marked with the letters of the alphabet, the numbers 0–9, the words “yes”, “no”, “hello” (occasionally), and “goodbye”, along with various symbols and graphics. It uses a planchette (small heart-shaped piece of wood or plastic) as a movable indicator to indicate the spirit’s message by spelling it out on the board during a séance. Some mainstream Christian denominations have warned against using Ouija boards, holding that they can lead to demonic possession. Occultists, on the other hand, are divided on the issue, with some saying that it can be a positive transformation; others rehash the warnings of many Christians and caution “inexperienced users” against it.
Plants used as a means for spiritual cleansing of the body and mind as well as the home. These are also used for protection, and to ward off evil entities or negative haunts.
Knowledge is power. So, it is important to empower yourself with knowledge of the paranormal for your own protection and credibility. The knowledge gained through conducting paranormal investigations is important, but it is essential to know where you are coming from, what to do when you get there, and where you will go from that point on. Some key subjects to read up on in the paranormal field include angelology, demonology, spiritualism, general history of the locations you investigate, geography, or any subject you may deem relevant to your journey.
For those that want protection from demonic or negative entities, a small bottle of holy water is an effective tool for protection. While I am not a religious person, the use of faith in negating negative paranormal activity has proven to work in some cases. Therefore, I do recommend that this is included in your kit.
NON-ELECTRONIC TRIGGER OBJECTS
The same principle of electronic trigger objects can also be applied with the use of any non-electronic objects. Trigger objects in general serve the purpose of attracting the attention of spirits or spiritual energy.
Much like the purpose of a motion sensor, wind chimes can be used in isolated environments that do not have air flow to detect the motion of a spirit. As long as the location is contained and void of any outside wind/breeze, the movement of a wind chime without any physical manipulation from a human source could be seen as paranormal activity.
Although usually used for séance purposes, the ambient light from candles can also provide some spirits with a sense of normalcy. Keep in mind that electricity has not been around forever, so it is not farfetched to have an entity that was used to candle light during a time before electricity feel more comfortable with a candle lit room as it is familiar to that entity. Candles and matches also serve the purpose of providing light and heat in case of emergency.
Though seemingly trivial, the use of talcum powder can be very useful for paranormal investigations. Usually for cases with claims of hearing footsteps, simply cover the area where the most activity is reported by the claimant with the powder. Set up a camcorder on a tripod to document the area. If a paranormal entity passes through, you may be surprised to find foot/shoe prints in the powder.
Some paranormal investigations are not always centralized to a single location or standing structure, and can lead to areas that are unfamiliar to you. Getting lost is not an option, so it is important to know where you are going, how to get there, and most importantly, how to get back. Maps and a compass (or two) are very valuable tools for investigations where travel outdoors is required.
Sometimes in the paranormal world you can get hurt. In some cases, there may not be immediate help available. Always carry a first aid kit on your person if traveling alone, or designate a person to carry a first aid kit when with a group.
Paranormal activity can be erratic and happen at random times without warning. Carry a notebook and writing tool in your kit to log paranormal activity as it occurs noting date, time, location and a description of the event. This is helpful with correlating and validating personal paranormal experiences when reviewing data collected from evidence analysis. A notebook is especially helpful in documenting paranormal events that can occur when no electronic equipment is recording, and in some cases, validating/matching descriptions between two (or more) investigators claiming to see the same apparition.
