A device used to record sound, usually to record speech, for later playback. These include both digital and tape recorders. Voice recorders are the most common venue for spirit communication as it is believed that the voices of the deceased can be heard within the white noise of the recording.
These devices are another set of common tools used in the paranormal field for capturing paranormal activity. It is recommended to use a camera/camcorder with high resolution and good lighting. Virtually any camera, so long as it is functional and clean, can be used for paranormal investigations.
Used to measure ambient electromagnetic fields of energy. Spirits are theorized to be comprised of this energy, or use it for manifestation and communication with the living. This device allows one to detect an anomalous fluctuation of electromagnetic energy not associated to other electronic devices, appliances, or wiring.
A variation of an EMF meter that detects electromagnetic energy and displays spikes of this energy in colored lights, instead of measuring in digitized numbers. The lights are set to an arching plain in which the color change will indicate the level of energy being emitted.
Another variation of an EMF meter that detects electromagnetic fields, as well as measuring ambient temperature readings. Additionally, this device usually has an antenna which produces a small field of EMF energy around the device. The purpose of the antenna producing the EMF field is to provide a barrier in which a more accurate reading of true spirit energy can be obtained.

Much like a MEL meter, this device measures EMF and temperature levels and converts these readings into vocalized speech through a word database.
A radio device that scans through multiple radio airwaves on a continuous loop. The speed and scanning direction (forward or reverse) can be adjusted in some devices. It is theorized that a spirit can communicate through the frequencies in the radio airwaves. True communication is generally accomplished when a spirit can communicate clearly through multiple sweeps over multiple airwaves.
Invisible radiant light energy, electromagnetic radiation with longer wavelengths than those of visible light, extending from the nominal red edge of the visible spectrum. Since some spirit activity can be invisible to the naked eye, IR lights are used with varied cameras and camcorders to capture unseen paranormal activity.
Light that covers the electromagnetic spectrum from infrared to near-ultraviolet. Stronger than infrared lighting in that it covers a wider spectrum of light. Paranormal activity that exists outside of the infrared light spectrum is captured using full spectrum lighting.
Thermal imaging and thermal video are examples of infrared imaging science. Thermographic cameras detect radiation in the infrared range of the electromagnetic spectrum and produce images of that radiation. Since infrared radiation is emitted by all objects with a temperature above absolute zero (according to the black body radiation law), thermography makes it possible to see one’s environment with or without visible illumination. The amount of radiation emitted by an object increases with temperature; therefore, thermography allows one to see variations in temperature. When viewed through a thermal imaging camera, warm objects stand out well against cooler backgrounds; humans and other warm-blooded animals become easily visible against the environment, day or night.
Much like a MEL meter, a REM Pod emits a small and steady field of EMF energy around the device. Any disturbance to that field of energy will cause the device to light up.
A grid of laser lights used in the paranormal field for the detection of the movement of spirits. Since the grid is comprised of lasers that are lineal and uninterrupted beams of light, any visible force that may cross these beams that is not made by human means can be considered paranormal activity.
Much like a laser grid’s function, motion sensor devices usually emit one laser beam that is invisible to the naked eye. In the paranormal field, any non-physical object/entity that may cross the beam of light will cause the sensor to alarm.
For safety purposes, since paranormal investigations are generally conducted in the dark, a flashlight is an essential tool to use as it allows you to illuminate your surroundings. It is always recommended to have one or two flashlights in your kit.
Usually used for reviewing audio recordings, a good set of headphones is very helpful in the analysis of EVP evidence.
Spirit energy can affect the ambient temperature of an area. It is recommended to have at least one thermometer on hand for detection of cold spots, or any other anomalous fluctuation of temperature.
Objects equipped with EMF detectors that are used for spirit communication. These objects are generally relevant to the paranormal claims in an area and are used to spark interest from the entity. For example: A house is experiencing paranormal activity with a child spirit. An EMF detector is integrated into a stuffed animal. As it is a toy, the child spirit will want to play with the stuffed animal. If the EMF detector detects EMF energy spikes, it can be theorized that the child spirit is near, or touching the stuffed animal toy, therefore, detecting spiritual activity.
An instrument measuring atmospheric pressure, used especially in forecasting the weather and determining altitude. It is theorized that spirits can affect barometric pressure, suggesting that the sudden fluctuation of barometric pressure is an indication that a spirit is near.

A device for measuring radioactivity by detecting and counting ionizing particles. Though rare, some paranormal activity can be attributed to the effects of radiation.
This device converts ground movement (displacement) into voltage, which may be recorded at a recording station. The deviation of this measured voltage from the base line is called the seismic response. Geophones are especially useful when experiencing paranormal activity such as footsteps, bangs, knocks, and other object manipulation.
